Justice League 4 Review

issue 4 coverSo for me the real stand out character in this title has to be Cyborg/Victor Stone, with him dealing with gaining new abilities, freaking out over his loss of humanity with the addition of his cybernetics, and the adaptability of said cybernetics I find really appealing. I would be remiss to forget to mention that Cyborg seems to be the most grounded/human character in a book with all the other characters being larger than life personalities. I still don’t care for how Geoff Johns depicts Batman, but as for the Leaguers I am enjoying. I buy when Green Lantern was starting out he was a arrogant jerk. Aquaman’s royal pomp is great, Wonder Woman has the personality of what one would expect for a Warrior Princess, I love Superman being the strong silent defender of Metropolis, and the Flash just has a really fun personality.

The reason I start this review focusing on the character depictions is because in this issue we finally fave the seven members of the League from the first cover all together for the first time. With the team finally being together we also get the first appearance of Darkseid in the DCnU, and frankly I don’t care for the redesign of him. We saw Darkseid earlier with the solicitation of issue six (using the art from this book) and then I didn’t have rea;;y any major problems with the design, but now that I have seen it in print I find it clunky and over designed. I’m a big fan of the original Jack Kirby design of Darkseid, and comparing it to the new version you lose the simple dignity of the character which allowed for the up play of the immense power that he wields which just feels lost in the redesign. At the end of the book we get a S.T.A.R. Laboratories Employee Dossier which hints more at the Red Tornado, the Metal Men, and Amazo in the Leagues future.
